Kentucky Lacrosse Association High School Girls’ Division 1 frontrunners Kentucky Country Day and Manual fought to the most prominent draw of the season on May 1, immediately sparking talk of a rematch in the tournament final.

But Ballard and Collegiate also played to a tie more than a month earlier, and it just so happened that those two teams were thrown together again in the tournament quarterfinals at Manual Stadium.

“We didn’t get to play overtime in the last game, and we’ve been looking forward to a second chance to beat them,” Collegiate senior Allison Grant said.

Fifth-seeded Ballard, which rallied with three goals in the last two minutes in the teams’ game on March 27, led fourth-seeded Collegiate 7-4 in the first half on Thursday. But the Amazons roared back to win 15-10.

Third-seeded Mercy also had to make a three-goal comeback in a 10-9 win over the sixth-seeded Ladydawgs at Seneca Park.

In other quarterfinal games, defending champion and top-seeded Manual beat eighth-seeded Sacred Heart 12-3, and second-seeded KCD blasted seventh-seeded Oldham 19-0.

Manual will play Collegiate and KCD will play Mercy in the semifinals at the University of Louisville on Monday. Manual edged Collegiate 9-7 on March 20, and KCD beat Mercy 12-7 on March 27.

Ballard-Collegiate

The Amazons pulled within two at halftime and outscored Ballard 10-3 in the second half.

Collegiate coach Susan Harrison credited Ballard’s goalie, senior Amanda “Bulldog” Laferty (pictured above), for holding off her players for most of the first 25 minutes.

“They have a really good goalie,” Harrison said. “We still had to hack away at her in the second half.”

Also, Harrison moved Grant from D-Wing to defense after the break, which provided more protection for junior goalie Liz Ratliff (11 saves).

Freshman Taylor Hodge and senior Lauren Givhan each scored three goals for Collegiate. Senior Devon Byrne had two goals and an assist, and senior Emily Vieth also had two goals. Senior Annie Decker and eighth-grader Danielle Bosscher each had a goal and an assist, and Grant, junior Ellen Bruenderman, and junior Caroline Goldstein scored one goal apiece.

Senior Meredith Fine scored four goals for Ballard. Junior Alex Smith scored three, junior Sarah Phelps scored two, and junior Julie Tafel scored one.

Ladydawgs-Mercy

Mercy won 7-6 in the teams’ first meeting on March 17, and the rematch was no less competitive.

Male’s Ladydawgs led 6-3 in the first half. But the Jaguars scored a goal before halftime and then surged to a 7-6 lead in the second half. The teams traded goals until junior Alli Flood scored the winner.

“We got our heads together, figured it out, and came back,” Mercy coach Mark Stovall said.

Flood, senior Lauren Flowers, senior Katie West, junior CJ Hermes, junior Chelsea Metzger, junior Katie Spradlin, and freshman Erin Schneidtmiller each scored one goal. Senior Allison Stovall made seven saves.

Senior Kelda Beachy and junior JR Ernst each scored four goals for the Ladydawgs, and junior Shelby Moneymaker scored one.

Sacred Heart-Manual

Junior Kaitlin Shumate led the host Crimsons with five goals.

Junior Danielle Blevins added two goals, senior Cora Wigger had a goal and four assists, and senior Sarah Meyer had a goal and two assists. Senior Samantha Canary - who led the KLA with 27 goals - junior Kara Evans, and junior Samantha Segers each scored one. Senior goalie Annie Makela made 13 saves.

Junior Lauren Hemker scored twice for Sacred Heart, and senior Hope Wurth scored the other goal.

Oldham-KCD

Freshmen Michelle Worthington and Ellen Esterhay each scored three goals for the host Bearcats. Worthington also had two assists.

Also for KCD, junior Gray Robinson, junior Christena Burell, junior Maggie Flowers, freshman Emory Goins, and freshman Mimi Magruder each scored two goals, and junior Hayley Grant, sophomore Stewart Cory, and eighth-grader Casey Bariteau each scored one.

Sophomore Kelly Beam (3 saves) and freshman Laura Campbell (4 saves) shared goalie duties in the shutout.
