William E. McAnulty Jr., 1947-2007

Our thoughts are with Kentucky Country Day's Patrick McAnulty, his family, and his school community following the death of his father, Justice William E. McAnulty Jr., on Aug. 23.
Patrick, a U.S. history teacher at KCD, is the head coach of the girls' lacrosse team and an assistant coach of the field hockey team.
Justice McAnulty, who was 59, was diagnosed with lung cancer in June and resigned from the Kentucky Supreme Court earlier this month.
To honor his fight for survival, KCD's field hockey players wore green headbands bearing the phrase "4 MAC" (pictured) in each of the team's first three games this season.
"My daughter (Christy, quoted below) is a field hockey player for KCD School. A few years back we heard about a new coach for hockey. Who was it going to be? Lucky for us it was Kate McAnulty. She was a great coach, as well as a great role model for the girls. We felt very lucky to have her. But what became evident was that her brother was also hanging around the field and pitching in on coaching and such. After Kate moved on to other things, Pat remained and has been a critical addition to the team. He's as a great motivator, a great mind, a quick wit, and a caring person. When I attended KCD's graduation last year, I was delighted to see on the program that Pat and Kate's dad, Judge McAnulty, was going to deliver the commencement address. After listening to the excellent speech that he delivered I knew two things: I saw where Pat gets his humor because his Dad was insightful and hilarious, and I saw how proud Judge McAnulty was of Pat. Pat is part of our KCD family and the passing of his father is a loss to us all."

"Judge McAnulty was the definition of a great person. He delivered a great graduation speech and introduced some great kids into the world. Two of his kids have coached me and they are both great people. In particular, Pat McAnulty is one of our current coaches, and our field hockey team loves him more than anything and are here for him anytime. The McAnulty family will always be in our prayers."
— Christy Chapman
"Pat and Kate, your Dad was a great man, and certainly made a difference and left his mark. We see so much of him in the two of you! Rest in peace, dear Bill. You will be missed, but fondly - so very, very fondly - remembered by so many."
— Cindy and Chip Burell
"Coach Mac and Kate, I'm sorry for your loss. Justice McAnulty's wonderful character reflects and lives on through both of your all's coaching abilities, mentoring and vibrant personalities."
— Christena Burell
"Our hearts go out to Coach Pat and his family at such a difficult time. Although his father cast quite a shadow, Pat is following in his footsteps by changing the world one person at a time. Pat's sense of humor, infectious smile, and commitment to his cause (his KCD students and players) are all a tribute to his father. Our thoughts and prayers are with Pat and his family."
— The Bade Bunch

— Maggie Bade
"Pat, the thougts and prayers of the Sullivan family are with you and your family."
— Sully
"Pat, you and your wonderful family are in our thoughts and prayers! You are such a fine young man that is truly 'making a difference' in so many families both in and out of the KCD community. Your father will be smiling down on you. Remember his way with humor and carry that on for him. We love and admire you!"
— Sherry, Charles and Paige Henry
"Pat, Jeff and I want you to know how sorry we are for the loss of your dad. He obviously was a very special guy and I know how proud you must be of his life and many accomplishments. His speech to the KCD graduates in May was truly a gift to all of them and all of us in the audience. It was most certainly "one for the ages!" When I looked through the pictures at the church yesterday, it was obvious that you have been blessed with his smile. Having been around you for a few years, it is even more evident that you inherited his sharp wit and sense of humor! Take care and know that we are thinking of you and your family."
— Laura and Jeff Horsey
"Pat and Kate, the comments left so far, no matter how true, could never do your dad true justice, and I dont think any amount of words ever could. He obviously did a great job for the community in all his years of being a judge and such. But his hilarious personality and love for life were evident to everyone he came across, which, by all the people at the visitation and funeral, I would say he touched more lives than anyone ever could have guessed. Hang in there and know we're all here for you!"
— Sarah Anderson
"Pat, we hold you and your family in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. We would like to share a poem, 'The Dash,' that we believe exemplifies the wonderful person your father was during his lifetime. We believe this exemplifies the message that your father delivered during the KCD graduation speech. This community is less complete without Justice William McAnulty Jr. As the poem states, '... only those who loved [him] know what that little line is worth.' We are very grateful for how he lived 'his dash.' God bless you and your family."
— Cheri, Doug, Katie and William Glass
"Coach, the Holbrooks are thinking about you."
— Jeff, Shandra, Samantha, and John Holbrook
"Pat, I am so sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Remember that your father lives in your heart!"
— LaRita Jones
"Pat, you are a huge part of our team, and everyday you come to practice with a smile on your face. You always have good suggestions to everyone. You are such a great coach, and I wanted to let you know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Love you, coach."
— Ashleigh
"Coach Mac, your Dad was a great man, and he made such an impact on the lives of many. His graduation speech will forever be remembered as the greatest and most moving of all time. We are all here for you. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers."
— Alyssa Wolff
"Pat, I am so sorry for your loss. Your dad was an amazing man who gave the finest graduation speech I've ever, ever seen. We miss you at KCD but want you to take as much time as you need."
— Michael
"Uncle Pat and Kate, the incredible outpouring of respect and love from everywhere in our community is an inspiration to us all as we come to grips with this tremendous loss. I've never been to a graduation where the speaker received a standing ovation until KCD's graduation in May. I am so happy that Anne Kash and your first group of Bearcats will have the memory of your Dad's incredible speech forever. Actually, everyone in attendance that night was touched by his words and will remember him with affection. You know you are like family to The Dobbins Gang, and we are here for you if you need anything."
— Jenny
"Pat, I am so sorry for your loss. I haven't really met your dad, but from what I can tell he was a truly amazing person. He made me laugh at graduation, and I have heard many people say many great things about him. I have been fortunatate enough to have never lost a close relative, but this weekend my dad was severely injured and is in the hospital. It is times like this that I am reminded of the ephemeral nature of life and of how important it is to make and spend time with those you love. My condolences for you, and if you need anything, do not hesitate to ask."
— Jason Johnson
"Pat, please pass on to your family how saddened we are by your father's passing. I saw him this summer and told him that I hadn't made the connection until recently that you were his son. I went on to tell him how much we thought of you and your help with the intramurals program at KCD and what a great all-around person you are, and he replied, 'Well, of course - he's my son!' Your Dad was always so friendly and fun to be around. He will be missed."
