Louisville athletes win big at state meet

Louisville student-athletes had a banner weekend at the Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Track Meet at Paul Dunbar, winning 14 events and one team championship.

All but two of those victories came in Class AAA, where the Male boys won their 27th team title - extending a state record - and Manual junior Mary Grace Pellegrini and Butler sophomore Chelsea Brown each won two individual titles.

The Bulldogs accumulated 66 points, seven more than runner-up Henderson County, to win their first title since 1998. Sophomore Justin Green provided Male’s only individual triumph when he won the 100 meters in 10.87 seconds. He also was part of Male’s winning 400-meter relay team, which included senior Douglas Beaumont and juniors Jeremy Fugate and Jeremy Webb and finished in 42.46.

St. Xavier’s Brian Long continued his remarkable senior year, winning the 1,600 meters in 4:26.09. He won the Class AAA title in cross country last November and has excelled in national meets since then, including a first-place finish in the 3,000 meters at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia in April.

Manual senior Jon Erickson won the 800 meters in 1:55.55; Trinity senior Agyei Williams won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.91; Ballard senior Johonne Hamilton won the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 1 inch; and Southern senior Detrick Briggs won the triple jump with a leap of 45 feet, 2 inches.

Pellegrini won her first two individual titles, taking the 1,600 meters in 5:04.12 and the 3,200 meters in 10:59.03. Brown - who won the 100 meters, the 200, the 400 meters, and the 300-meter hurdles as a freshman last year - had to settle for two wins on Saturday, prevailing in the 400 meters in 56.98 and the 300-meter hurdles in 44.22.

Ballard sophomore Jazzmin Jeter was the other local girl to win in Class AAA, finishing the 200 meters in 24.96 to edge teammate Lutisha Bowen, Butler sophomore Tiffany Rogers, and Brown.

In Class AA, Western senior LaEssence Buckner won the 100 meters in 12.49. And in Class A, Holy Cross junior Anna Roarx won the shot put with a throw of 34 feet, 1¾ feet.
