Louisville runners take KYTrackXC.com awards

KYTrackXC.com has announced its awards for the recently concluded high school indoor track and field season, and Louisville student-athletes dominate the list.

The honorees include Eastern’s Ronald Barlow, the Boys’ Sprinter of the Year; St. Xavier’s Brian Long, the Boys’ Distance Runner of the Year; Butler’s Tiffany Rogers, the Girls’ Sprinter of the Year; and Manual’s Mary Grace Pellegrini, the Girls’ Distance Runner of the Year.

The only other awards were given to Mercer County’s Chrys Jones (Boys’ Field Event Athlete of the Year) and Rockcastle County’s Morgan Thacker (Girls’ Field Event Athlete of the Year).

Barlow posted the fastest times in the state at both 200 and 400 meters. He set Wildcat Invitational records at both distances and also won the Class AAA 400-meter race at the Mason Dixon Games.

Long, who won the Class AAA title in cross country last November, posted the fastest times in the state at both 1,500 meters and two miles. He won the two-mile race at the Wildcat Invitational and the University of Kentucky High School Invitational, and he also won the Class AAA 1,500-meter race at the Mason Dixon Games. He then placed third in the two-mile race at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships in New York.

Rogers posted the fastest times in the state at both 55 and 60 meters. She set a Wildcat Invitational record of 7.83 seconds in the 60-meter race and won the Class AAA 55-meter race at the Mason Dixon Games.

Pellegrini won the 800-meter race at the Wildcat Invitational but turned the most heads at the University of Kentucky High School Invitational, where she broke the previous two-mile record in a career-best 10:58.27. She also ran the two-mile race at the Nike Indoor Nationals and finished 16th in 11:12.

Those six athletes also headline KYTrackXC.com’s All-Indoor teams, which include two competitors in each event.

Louisville boys on those teams are Male teammates Justin Green and Jeremy Fugate in the 55/60 meters; Manual’s Gerry Cooper in the 200 meters; Barlow and Male’s Lewis Dodson in the 400 meters; Manual’s Jon Erickson in the 800 meters; Long in the 3,000/3,200 meters; Male in both the 800- and 1,600-meter relays; and Jeffersontown’s Joshua Brooks in the triple jump.

Louisville girls on those teams are Rogers and Western’s Laessence Buckner in the 55/60 meters; Ballard’s Jazzmin Jeter and Manual’s Jennifer Nwachukwu in the 200 meters; Butler’s Chelsea Brown in the 400 meters; Ballard’s Shelby Wagenseller in the 800 meters; Manual’s Colleen Campbell in the 1,500/1,600 meters; Pellegrini and Assumption’s Adrienne Curtis in the 3,000/3,200 meters; Ballard and Butler in the 800-meter relay; Ballard also in the 1,600-meter relay; Assumption in the 3,200-meter relay; Butler’s Jade Miles in the long jump; Ballard’s Lutisha Bowen in the triple jump; and Manual’s Eleanor Mills in the shot put.
