KIVA tops MAVA in two finals at AAU nationals

Louisville’s premier club programs, the Kentucky Indiana Volleyball Academy (KIVA) and the MidAmerica Volleyball Association (MAVA), dominated two of the elite divisions at the AAU Girls’ Junior National Volleyball Championships at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.

One was just a little more dominant than the other.

Those clubs collided in the Championship Bracket final in both the 16-and-under Open division and the 17-and-under Open division on Wednesday, and KIVA prevailed in each match.

KIVA 16 Red swept MAVA 16 Elite 25-22, 25-18 in the 16-and-under final, completing an unbeaten run through pool play and the Championship Bracket. KIVA 16 Red’s All-Americans included MVP Alexis Bauer, Whitney Craven, and Ellie Roberson. MAVA 16 Elite’s Kelsey Anderson, Casey Garvey, and Paige Wessel also were named All-Americans.

KIVA 17 Red lost to MAVA 17 Elite in pool play but turned the tables in the 17-and-under final, winning 25-22, 25-20. KIVA 17 Red’s Stephanie Riley was the MVP, and teammates Sloane Donhoff (pictured at right, photo by Thomas Wachtel) and Kaitlynn James were named All-Americans with MAVA 17 Elite’s Emily Lechleiter, Alli O’Connor, and Natalie Schonefeld.

KIVA 18 Red’s Kirstie Brangers also was named an All-American after her team’s fifth-place finish in the Championship Bracket of the 18-and-under Open division.

KIVA already had earned a national title on Sunday, when KIVA 14 Red won in the 14-and-under Open division’s Championship bracket for the fourth time in five years.
