The Kentucky Indiana Volleyball Academy (KIVA) won a national title during the first session of the AAU Girls’ Junior National Volleyball Championships at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.
KIVA 14 Red defeated Team Indiana’s Evil Pop Tarts 25-19, 17-25, 15-5 in the 14-and-under Open division’s Championship Bracket on Saturday to win its fourth title in five years, leading the entries from Louisville’s two elite clubs. KIVA 14 Red’s Claire Gerwig, Jacqueline Napper, and Courtney Robison - the MVP - were named All-Americans.
KIVA and the MidAmerica Volleyball Association (MAVA) were successful in several other age divisions that concluded on Saturday.
MAVA 15 Elite was the runner-up in the Championship Bracket of the 15-and-under Open division, losing to the Mizuno Northern Lights 25-18, 21-25, 16-14 in the final. MAVA 15 Elite’s Kelsey Dunaway, Emily Juhl, and Caitlin Welch were named All-Americans, as was Lexie Krall from fifth-place KIVA 15 Red.
KIVA 15 White was the runner-up in the Championship Bracket of the 15-and-under Club division, losing to Club Voleibol Vaqueros 25-19, 25-20 in the final. KIVA 15 White’s Laura Der, Jordan Owens, and Alexis Smith were named All-Americans, as was Melissa Sexton from fifth-place MAVA 15 Blue.
MAVA 14 Elite tied for third in the Championship Bracket of the 14-and-under Open division, and Elisa Burkman and Sophie Kellerman were named All-Americans.
In the 14-and-under Club division’s Championship Bracket, fifth-place KIVA 14 White’s Taylor Allgeier and fifth-place MAVA 14 Blue’s Colbey Cameron were named All-Americans. KIVA 14 Black won the 14-and-under Club division’s Red Bracket.
MAVA 13 Elite also tied for third in the 13-and-under Championship Bracket, and Meredith Ashy and Dallas Zimmerman were named All-Americans. MAVA 13 Blue won the Red Bracket and MAVA 13 Red won the Blue Bracket in that same age division.
The older age divisions - 16 Open, 16 Club, 17 Open, 17 Club, 18 Open, and 18 Club - will start on Sunday and end on Wednesday.
