Local seniors win USTA League Tennis state titles

Two teams from Louisville won titles at the USTA League Tennis Senior Kentucky Championships in Henderson on Monday.
Mike Cothran’s team, which plays at Fern Valley Tennis Club, beat Don Nuerge’s Bowling Green-based team 2-1 in the final of the 3.5 Senior Men‘s division. Cothran’s team had won three of its four matches in Flight C and then pulled out a 2-1 victory over the Jerry Blesch/David Voss team from Lexington in the semifinals.
Mike Schneider’s 3.0 Senior Men’s team, which plays at Advantage Tennis and Fitness, went 3-0 in its four-team division and lost just six sets along the way. Its 2-1 victory over Ed Coleman’s Lexington-based team clinched the title.
Both teams advanced to the USTA League Tennis Southern Sectional Championships, which will be held in Mobile, Ala., July 21-29.

Schneider’s team (pictured in bottom photo, courtesy of USTA Kentucky) includes Milton Gillis, David Hitt, Tony Howard, George Jansing, Scott Jones, August Jost, Brent Phillips, Rudy Rodriguez, John Slaughter, Bobby Tokuuke, and Charles Whelan.
Three other Louisville teams lost in their respective division finals: Gary Kidd’s 4.0 Senior Men’s team, Marcy Suter’s 3.5 Senior Women’s team, and Judith Bush’s 3.0 Senior Women’s team.
