Louisville teams ruled the USTA League Tennis Adult Kentucky Championships in Lexington, winning seven of the 10 divisions that were contested between Friday and Monday.
Louisville’s champions include Joshua Bloyd’s team in the 2.5 Adult Men’s division; Kevin Chaplin’s team in the 3.5 Adult Men’s division; Andrew Vine’s team in the 4.5 Adult Men’s division; Leslie Ann Porta’s team in the 2.5 Adult Women’s division; Beverly Lewis’ team in the 3.0 Adult Women’s division; Judy Davenport’s team in the 3.5 Adult Women’s division; and Patti Smith’s team in the 4.0 Adult Women’s division.
Each of those teams next will play in the USTA League Tennis Southern Sectional Championships, which will be held in Mobile, Ala., July 21-29.
Bloyd’s team, which is based at The Tennis Club at Springhurst, had the shortest route to the championship. It played three matches in a three-team division and won all three to clinch the 2.5 title. Bloyd’s teammates were Bruce Gillis, Michael Gillis, Jeff Harris, Bradley Henderson, Steve Henderson, Charlie Holden, John Edward Iwanicki, Eric Klehr, Nathan Stewart, and Jay Turner.
Chaplin’s team, which is based at Advantage Tennis and Fitness, beat the Mark Jensen-Michael Hamann team from Lexington 4-1 in the 3.0 final on Monday after winning three of four matches - all closely-contested - in Flight A. Chaplin’s teammates were David Browder, Jeff Daiber, Steve Daniels, Grant Delaney, Thomas Drybrough, Rene Heck, Eric Ivy, Stuart Kaufman, Mitchell Ryan Koontz, John Leake, Kyle Mason, Chris Nelson, Darin Niedens, Scott Sells, Phillip Simoneaux, and Frank Turiello.
Vine’s team, which is based at the Louisville Boat Club, won all four of its matches in a five-team division to win the 4.5 title. Vine’s players were Kyle Bates, Tom Campbell, Scot Corson, Chad Duncan, David English, Scott Gilmour, Patrick Hayden, Erik Heitmann, Mike Lindsay, Scott Kaskocsak, Jeremy Murphy, William O’Bryan, Stephen Pitts, Justin Pohn, Jeff Rock, David Rueff, Andrew Stevens, and Yano Touma.
Porta’s team, which is based at the Louisville Tennis Club, won a tiebreaker with Lee Ann Crabtree’s Paducah team to earn the 2.5 title. Both teams went 3-1 in the five-team division, but Porta’s team won eight individual matches while Crabtree’s team won seven. Porta’s team also would have had the edge in any additional tiebreakers. Her teammates were Tatiana Bartolucci, Elizabeth Bentley, Jane Bruning, Beth Dufour, Sommer Kidwell, Katherine McCall, Tifani Moore, Amy Russell, and Ciana Xiong.
Lewis’ team, which is based at The Tennis Club at Springhurst, edged Gabrielle Springs’ Bowling Green team 3-2 in the 3.0 final on Sunday. It had won its three matches in Flight B and beat Cathy Henness’ Owensboro team 3-2 in the semifinals on Saturday. Lewis’ teammates were Judette Baylon, Kim Cox, Wendy Dingle, Carol Gregory, Cathy Hancock, Rachael Holden, Elizabeth Jones, Lisa Lee-Bruns, Lori Levinson, Sharon Miles, Diana Nemec, Patrice Stevens, Rita Stosberg, Cynthia Vogt, Martha Williams, and Betty Winters.
Davenport’s team, which also is based at The Tennis Club at Springhurst, defeated Anne Morgan’s Purchase Area team 3-2 in the 3.5 final on Monday after a 4-1 win over Jane St. Clair’s Louisville team in the semifinals earlier in the day. Davenport’s team had won three of its four matches in Flight B. Her teammates were Robin Barich, Cari Beck, Shelia Colyer, Tracy Crum, Elaine Ellis, Sarah Hyland, Karen Kutz, Tracy Liston, Lou Ann Parrino, Angie Schiavone, Robin Smith, Madonna Thomas, Elise Urton, Susan West, and Megan Williams.
Smith’s team, which is based at the University of Louisville, beat Kourtney Benjelloun’s Lexington team 3-2 in the 4.0 final on Sunday. That followed a 3-2 win over Pam Williams’ Louisville team in the semifinals and a near-perfect three-match run through Flight A, in which the team lost just one of 15 individual matches. Smith’s teammates were Stacy Beavers, Diane Blythe, Janis Kern, Britney Linde, A. Stewart Lussky, Maria Martin, Molly Mershon, Britta Oliver, Dayna Payton, Jessica Pfeiffer, Vicky Phillips, Nanette Simon, Donna Walsh, and Marie Wurster.
