Joe Creason tournament under way in Louisville

The Joe Creason Kentucky State Qualifier started quietly around Louisville on Saturday, when only 14 of the 20 divisions were in action.

The tournament, which features Kentucky's top junior players, is the state's qualifier for the Southern Closed Championships.

All but one of the seeded singles players and doubles teams that played also won and advanced to the next round on Sunday. In the only final, Bowling Green residents Cassie Pennington and Terra Sheldon beat Louisville residents Morgan Malone and Devon Rachel 8-1 for the Girls 10 Doubles division title.

In the only upset, Prospect residents Liam Friel and Christopher Laveck beat second-seeded Louisville residents Sebastian Bromley and Dariush Moslemi 8-6 in the semifinals of the Boys 10 Doubles division at Chickasaw Park. Friel and Laveck will played the top-seeded tandem, Max Meade of Ashland and Bryce Shelton of Lexington, in the final at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Play will begin on Sunday in Boys 18 Doubles (U of L), Girls 12 Singles (Seneca Park), Girls 18 Singles (U of L), Girls 12 Doubles (Seneca Park), Girls 16 Doubles (Seneca Park), and Girls 18 Doubles (U of L).
